Sew a Zero-Waste Zipper Pouch That Opens Extra Wide

Sew a Zero-Waste Zipper Pouch That Opens Extra Wide

This open-wide box pouch is the kind of zipper pouch you’ll want to make again and again—unzip it, and it opens up like a little box so you can see everything at a glance.

The best part? It’s a no-waste sewing project made from simple rectangular fabric pieces, so it’s beginner-friendly and perfect for using scraps or fat quarters.

Because it’s long and roomy, it works beautifully as a pencil case, a hair tool pouch, a craft/tool organizer, or even a yarn pouch. In this post, I’ll walk you through how to sew it in two practical sizes!

The finished measurements of this pouch are approximately
<Small>
20㎝(8″) W × 10㎝(4″) H × 9㎝(3⅝″) D.
<Large>
25㎝(9⅞″) W × 11㎝(4⅜″) H × 10㎝(4″) D.

Let's get started!!

<Small>
◆ Main panel
①  22㎝ × 31㎝ (8¾″ × 12¼″) Outer layer
①  22㎝ × 31㎝ (8¾″ × 12¼″) Lining
①  20㎝ × 29㎝ (8″ × 11½″) Fusible fleece
◆ Side panel
④  11㎝ × 11㎝ (4⅜″ × 4⅜″) Contrast Color Fabric
◆ Others
①  25㎝ (10″) Zipper
①  6㎝ × 5㎝ (2⅜″ × 2″) Contrast Color Fabric

<Large>
◆ Main panel
①  27㎝ × 34㎝ (10¾″ × 13½″) Outer layer
①  27㎝ × 34㎝ (10¾″ × 13½″) Lining
①  25㎝ × 32㎝ (9⅞″ × 12⅝″) Fusible fleece
◆ Side panel
④  12㎝ × 12㎝ (4¾″ × 4¾″) Contrast Color Fabric
◆ Others
①  30㎝ (11⅞″) Zipper
①  6㎝ × 5㎝ (2⅜″ × 2″) Contrast Color Fabric

Place the side panels right sides together in pairs and sew along three sides.

Turn them right side out, topstitch the upper edge.

Baste the side panels onto both sides of the main outer panel.

Place the right side of the zipper against the top and bottom edges of the main outer panel.
Using your zipper foot, sew along top edge using a 1㎝(3/8″) seam allowance, leaving 2㎝(3/4″) at the end of the zipper.

Place the right side of the lining on top, then sew along all four sides, leaving an opening for turning.

Turn right side out, press pieces away from and top stitch on both 3㎜ (1/8″) away from the zipper.

Stand the side panels up to meet the edges of the main fabric and sew along the edge.

You are finished!!!
