How to Sew a Multi-Pocket Bucket Bag
(Perfect Beginner Project!)
Bucket bags are having a major moment in functional fashion right now, but finding one with enough pockets is a real struggle. Today, we're fixing that by sewing a stylish drawstring crossbody bag featuring three distinct sections! If you're new to sewing, this is the perfect weekend project for you. The pattern is broken down into super simple, easy-to-follow steps that make assembling those pockets a breeze. Let’s get stitching and make something you'll want to wear every day.

Sew the printed Upper Panel to the solid Bottom Panel with right sides together using a 0.7cm (1/4″) seam allowance.
Press the seam allowance toward the Bottom Panel and topstitch it in place.
Place the assembled Exterior panel and the Lining panel right sides together, sew the top edge, turn wrong sides together, and topstitch.
Position the outer main front panel on the striped Inner pouch Exterior panel and stitch a horizontal line across the bottom.
Place the two Inner pouch Exterior panels right sides together and sew the bottom edge using a 0.7cm (1/4″) seam allowance. Place the two Inner pouch Lining panels right sides together and sew the bottom edge with a 0.7cm (1/4″) seam allowance.
Align the assembled Inner pouch Exterior and Lining pieces right sides together and sew along both top edges.
Rearrange the layers so the Exterior sides face each other and the Lining sides face each other. Sew the side seams using a 0.7cm (1/4″) seam allowance, leaving a gap near the top of the Exterior sides for the drawstring. Ensure you leave a generous turning gap on one side of the Lining before completing the side seams.
Flatten the bottom corners of both the Exterior and Lining to form triangles, and stitch straight across to create a boxed base.
Gently turn the entire bag right side out through the gap left in the Lining. Fold the raw edges of the turning gap inward and stitch it securely closed. Push the Lining smoothly down into the bag, press the top edge thoroughly, and topstitch 2cm (3/4″) down from the rim. Sew a second line of topstitching 2cm (3/4″) below the first line to finish forming the drawstring casing.
Use a safety pin to guide two cords through the casing from opposite sides, knotting the ends securely. Attach snap buttons to the top center of the pockets and clip your finished shoulder strap to the D-rings.
