How to Sew Eco-Friendly Folding Shopper Bag
Let’s be honest, we all have that drawer full of plastic bags we never use.
I decided it was time for a change, so I made this super light shoulder bag that folds right into its own pocket!
It’s perfect for those unplanned grocery runs, and it looks so much better on your arm than a plastic shopper bag.
Grab some fun fabric and let's sew this together!
The finished measurements of this folding shopper bag are approximately
42㎝(16⅝″) W × 38㎝(15″) H.
42㎝(16⅝″) W × 38㎝(15″) H.

Let's get started!!
◆ Main panel
② 45㎝ × 70㎝ (17¾″ × 27⅝″) Outer layer
◆ Others
① 3.5㎝(1⅜″) Wide bias tape 330㎝(130½″)
Use the leftover fabric from the handle cutouts to create a functional pocket.
Place the two pocket pieces right sides together (RST) and stitch with a 0.7㎝(1/4″) seam allowance.
Turn the piece right side out. Fold up 10㎝(4″) from the bottom on both the front and back sides, then sew along both side edges.
Turn the completed pocket right side out again. Position it on the inside of the main fabric and stitch the top edge to secure it.
Place the two main fabric panels with wrong sides together (WST) and sew along the edges with a 0.5㎝(3/16″) seam allowance.
Turn the bag inside out (so the right sides are now facing each other) and sew again with a 0.7㎝(1/4″) seam allowance.
(Note: This is the French Seam technique, which hides the raw edges perfectly!)
Use the same method (French Seam) when connecting the handles for a clean and sturdy finish.
Bind the edges of the shoulder straps with bias tape to complete your bag.
(Tip: You can also use a double-fold hem instead of bias tape for a different look.)
That’s it for today!
